What Are the Safest Family Cars in an Accident?

No one wants to be in an accident with their family. But, when you buy a vehicle, the potential for an accident should always be considered. Some family vehicles are safer than others, and if you plan to travel long distances or just around town, the safer vehicles will give you an additional peace of mind on the road.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety releases their Top Safety Picks each year. While the list is too long to recite, there are some vehicles that are affordable and extremely safe, according to the IIHS. You can see the full list of 2014 winners as well as previous years.

Auto accidents are not in your control (which you can learn from these common causes of accidents). Therefore, the first line of defense you have in an accident is by purchasing a safe family vehicle.

Safest Sedans

Sedans are a common fixture in families with kids. That is because one parent may still commute; therefore, they need something that is easy on gas, but is still safe for the family. According to the IIHS report, in 2014 some of the safest sedans included:

  • 2014 Ford Focus
  • 2014 Honda Civic 2-Door and 4-Door
  • 2014 Acura TL and TLX
  • 2015 Audi A3
  • 2014 Volvo S60
  • 2015 Hyundai Genesis
  • 2014 Mercedes E Class
  • 2014 Acura RLX
  • 2015 Subaru WRX, Impreza, and XV Crosstrek

Safest SUVs

Many families are finding SUVs more practical for their lifestyle. From their exceptional abilities in poor weather to giving parents extra storage, they have numerous advantages. Some of the safest SUVs on the market according to IIHS, include:

  • 2014 Subaru Forester
  • 2014 Nissan Rogue
  • 2014 GMC Terrain
  • 2014 Toyota Highlander
  • 2014 Mercedes M Class

Minivans are the ultimate family vehicle. They have extra storage, features, and are more affordable than SUVs. While there are many minivans on the market, IIHS only listed two minivans in their Top Safety Picks for 2014, which included:

  • 2014-15 Honda Odyssey
  • 2015 Toyota Sienna

Both of these minivans have been on the top list since 2011, while the Sienna continues since 2010.

While you are traveling with the family for the holidays (read the stats on Thanksgiving related accidents), you can remain safe on the road with the right vehicle. Not to mention, the safer the vehicle, the lower your auto insurance premium may be.
