Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Linked To Cancer

Although it is commonly known that exposure to pesticides and weed-killers can be harmful, recent data indicates that the risks may be greater than previously thought. If you have experienced detrimental health effects after using Roundup Ready, you may be wise to seek the advice of a seasoned personal injury attorney.

Immediate Symptoms

The primary ingredient in Roundup is glyphosate, a toxin known to have exacerbated effects when in combination with chemicals commonly found in weed killers. Individuals whose exposure occurred as a result of agricultural work, or even weekend gardeners, may experience the following worrisome effects shortly after coming into contact with the substance:

  • Nausea and vomiting;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Heavy salivation;
  • Burning sensation in the mouth and throat.

These symptoms may occur after inhaling the spray, or experiencing contact with the skin or eyes. While a single incidence may not be worrisome, repeated exposure has been linked to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Monsanto Knew of the Cancer Connection

Despite claims to the contrary, investigations indicate that Monsanto executives endeavored to misrepresent data that their own scientists produced in an attempt to tamp down public reaction to the cancer link. In 1984, when researchers concluded that there was a cancer connection to their product, Monsanto endeavored to create a new panel of experts to discredit the previous findings. Then in 1999, Monsanto’s data was evaluated by genetic toxicologist, James Perry in hopes of getting a positive evaluation. Instead, Perry concluded that the cancer connection was real. Monsanto’s response was to bury the report.

The company ultimately put their money into fronting groups to publish articles praising their product, and fighting government regulations. Additionally, they paid individuals to make online comments in defense of Monsanto and Roundup. Meanwhile, Monsanto spent $60 million lobbying the EPA, and even has been accused of colluding with officials from the EPA to get the results they want.

Food Exposure

Beyond the risks of direct exposure to Monsanto’s product, there are questions as to the safety of food contaminated with Roundup products. In fact, alarming levels of glyphosate is found in kitchens across this country. Some common foods detected with high amounts of this poison include:

  • Cheerios;
  • Doritos;
  • Goldfish crackers;
  • Ritz crackers;
  • Oreos; and
  • Fritos.

Legal Recourse

The truth is, independent researchers have unanimously concluded that the levels of glyphosate are at least 70 times greater than acceptably safe levels in this country. If it proves to be true that Monsanto knew of the cancer risks and covered it up, they may be liable for millions in damages to help cancer victims and their families. Costs they may be on the hook for include:

  • Medical expenses;
  • Lost past and future earnings;
  • Pain and suffering;
  • Emotional distress;
  • Punitive damages.
