How this Horrible Wrong-Way Car Accident Made National Headlines

Thousands of car accidents occur every day in the United States, and unfortunately, the holidays are no exception. Car accidents happen for all kinds of reasons, none of which should come as a surprise. Most accidents involve speeding, driving recklessly, alcohol consumption, and even texting and driving. In fact, over this past holiday season, a horrific car accident that made national headlines happened on I-95 in Miami all because of a wrong turn…

According to Florida highway patrol authorities, this particular accident left five people dead, including a family of four. The victims were killed when 23-year old Alexandra Lefler was driving the wrong way in the northbound lane of the Interstate. She sideswiped one car and smashed into another car head-on.Lefler and all of the passengers in the other car were killed. Florida officials reported that the driver of the struck car was 47-year old Miguel Gil.

In this particular case, Lefler was killed when her pickup truck overturned during the crash. Two members of the Gil family were not wearing seatbelts at the time of impact and were ejected from their vehicle.

Risk and Remorse…

While the families of the deceased expressed immeasurable sadness over the unimaginable tragedy, many wondered why these types of accidents keep happening on Florida’s stretch of I-95. One family member expressed her anger at the situation, stating that, “He’s not the only one who has died in a wrong-way crash on I-95.”

Making a Wrong Turn, Right…

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Joe Sanchez observed that many accidents are caused by drivers that are drunk or otherwise under the influence. He also noted that many people driving this stretch of I-95 are not from Florida, do not know where they are, do not read signs and make wrong turns.

Many people believe that wrong-way crashes will continue happening until something is done to prevent the situation, but no one seems to have a solution to the ongoing problem.

A Sobering Reminder…

Regardless of why and how this particular accident happened, it reminds us that it is imperative to always remain alert and aware of our surroundings on the road, especially while driving on Florida’s busy highways.

No, we don’t have all the answers to why accidents occur, and why they occur so often, but there are things that each of us can do to make sure that we are as safe and protected as can be. We cannot always prevent accidents, but we can take steps to increase our safety.

  • Always wear seatbelts.

  • Make sure that car seats are properly installed, and infants and young children are correctly fastened and buckled in their seats.

  • Adhere to motor vehicle rules, regulations and traffic laws.

  • Drive defensively and be ready to take action if a dangerous situation presents itself.

  • Remain alert.

  • Stay awake.
