Helpful Tips for Preventing a Car Accident

Accidents are common for a number of reasons, such as a lack of attention, distracted driving, or even driving under the influence. While these may truly be “accidents”, and might seem like simple mistakes, accidents can have some seriously devastating results—and even cause fatalities.

Everyone has the ability to practice the following safety tips to prevent a car accident.

Call the Police

Don’t be afraid to contact the authorities if you notice someone driving recklessly or you believe him or her to be driving under the influence. For example, texting and driving is not only dangerous but it is illegal in the state of Florida. If you pass a driver who is texting or playing on his or her phone, then contact your local authorities.

While you may be aware of another driver’s mistakes, other drivers may not be. Your call to the police can prevent an accident with another driver and possibly save a life.

Use Your Better Judgment

Using your better judgment and following your instincts may be exactly what you need to keep you and your family safe on the road.

Focus on the weather and driving conditions to ensure that you are driving as safely as possible. Be sure to always maintain a safe distance between you and the driver in front of you, and always be sure that you can see another driver and his or her lights. If the roads are slick, then drive at a speed that you know you will be able to safely stop if you need to do so quickly.

Strict Vehicle Rules

If you have passengers in the vehicle with you, then be sure to enforce strict driving rules and regulations. Make sure that the radio and conversation levels are always at a volume that will allow you to hear outside noises, such as ambulances, horns or police cars.

Be sure that your children bring along some items that will keep them distracted and busy during a long car ride. Purchasing and installing a portable DVD-player can help get through long car rides as well.
If you are the passenger in the car and your spouse or child is driving, be sure to enforce a no cell phone zone in the driver’s seat. A cell phone should be placed on vibrate, in the glove compartment or inside the center console. This can reduce any temptation to use it while a vehicle is in motion.
